Though using your phone in the bathroom seems harmless, experts link it to health, hygiene and mental risks.
Avoiding this habit can enhance digestion and improve hygiene.
Medical professionals and notably, concerned mothers have long warned against using smartphones in the restroom. While it may seem like an innocent habit, several neurological studies suggest it can negatively impact both mental and physical health.
As reported by The Indian Express, Dr Hema Krishna P, consultant in neurology and movement disorders at Aster CMI Hospital, Bengaluru, highlighted five significant reasons why avoiding phone use in the bathroom is essential.
Health Risks of Using Phones In The Washroom
Extended Sitting and Poor Circulation
Dr Hema Krishna explained that prolonged sitting while using a smartphone in the restroom can lead to poor blood circulation, increasing the likelihood of developing haemorrhoids and other related health concerns.
Disrupted Bowel Movements
She further noted that distractions from digital content can interfere with the body’s natural bowel movement process, potentially leading to constipation and other digestive issues.
Psychological Dependence
Frequent smartphone use in such settings can create a psychological dependence on constant digital stimulation, making it difficult for individuals to experience moments of solitude or mindfulness without their devices.
Hygiene and Bacterial Contamination
Dr Hema Krishna emphasised that bathrooms are a hotspot for bacteria and handling a phone in such an environment increases the risk of transferring harmful pathogens to the device. Since people often bring their phones close to their faces and hands, this habit can pose a significant health risk. Furthermore, smartphones are rarely disinfected regularly, making them a breeding ground for germs.
Reduced Attention Span
According to the expert, continuously engaging with digital content, even in the restroom, can lead to a fragmented attention span, making it harder to focus on tasks outside the bathroom. Over time, this can affect mental clarity and productivity.
Does Using A Phone In The Washroom Cause Hemorrhoids?
According to The Indian Express, Dr Krishnamohan Y, Clinical Director of Bariatric and GI Surgery at CARE Hospitals, clarified that while using a phone in the toilet is not a direct cause of haemorrhoids, it can worsen existing ones or increase the risk due to prolonged sitting and unnecessary straining during bowel movements.
He pointed out that when individuals become engrossed in their phones, they spend more time on the toilet, often unknowingly straining during bowel movements, which is a known risk factor for haemorrhoids.
While scrolling through your phone in the restroom may seem harmless, experts warn that it can lead to health, hygiene and psychological issues over time. Avoiding this habit can improve digestion, maintain better hygiene and enhance mental focus, ultimately benefiting overall well-being.
