Diwali is the festival of lights, but like all festivals, the celebration feels incomplete without mouth-watering sweets. As the country celebrates Diwali on October 31 and November 1, the demand for sweets has reached fever pitch.

In Rajasthan’s Pali, the famous sweet Gulab Halwa, is in particularly high demand. While this halwa is popular year-round, its popularity has surged ten-fold this Diwali season with long queues forming daily.

The sheer volume of sales, with sweets worth about Rs 25-30 lakh sold daily, demonstrates the craze for this delicacy. According to local shopkeepers, more than 8,000 kg of Gulab Halwa is being sold in the city every day.

The city’s sweets market has gained significant momentum with the Diwali festivities. Despite employing additional confectioners and helpers, sweet shops are struggling to meet the overwhelming demand for this festive favourite.

Halwa Sales Soaring with Thousands of Kilos Sold Daily

One of the local venders, Chain Ji Gulab Halwa, told Local18 that during the festival season, sweets made from dry fruits and Pali’s Gulab Halwa are in especially high demand. “It stays fresh for three to four days. Currently, due to Diwali, around 8,000kg of Gulab Halwa are being sold daily. The crowds are so large that customers often wait up to 30 minutes for their turn,” one of the shop workers said.

In Pali, Chainji Halwa is priced at Rs 320 per kg, Hukamji Halwa at Rs 300 per kg, and Gulab Halwa at Rs 360 per kg.

High demand in India and abroad

This iconic halwa from Pali is available in sweet shops across Rajasthan, including in cities like Jodhpur, and is distributed nationwide through food chains. According to reports, shopkeepers are also getting orders from abroad, with many sending it as a Diwali gift to family members overseas.

Praised by PM Modi

The popularity of Pali’s Gulab Halwa reached new heights when Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised it in an election rally held in Sumerpur, Pali district three years ago. In his speech in Godwad, PM Modi described Gulab Halwa as a local speciality, highlighting its cultural significance to the area.
