More than 25 years after the release of the cult-classic Happy Gilmore, Netflix announced in May 2024 that a sequel is officially in development.
Adam Sandler will reprise his role as a lovable, unconventional golfer in Happy Gilmore 2.
According to US Weekly, the original 1996 comedy followed Sandler’s character, an unsuccessful hockey player who discovers a surprising talent for golf and enters a tournament to save his grandmother’s home from foreclosure.
Moreover, the film featured an ensemble cast including Christopher McDonald, Julie Bowen, Carl Weathers, and Ben Stiller.
McDonald, who played the iconic villain Shooter McGavin, revealed in March 2024 that the sequel was in early stages.
While speaking on Cleveland’s 92.3 The Fan, he shared, “Adam showed me the first draft of Happy Gilmore 2 and said, ‘You’re going to love this.’”
Additionally, Netflix has since confirmed that McDonald and Julie Bowen, who played Virginia Venit, will reprise their roles.
While joining the cast are NFL star Travis Kelce, rapper Bad Bunny, and even a cameo from Eminem, who Sandler described as “funny as hell” during his appearance on The Dan Patrick Show.
As the plot details remain under wraps, Sandler teased that he and his team are actively working on the script.
In this regard, he said, “We’ve been jamming and writing. We have a million ideas, and we want to make sure fans are excited and not disappointed.”
Furthermore, Bowen also confirmed during a September interview on Today that her character remains romantically involved with Sandler’s in Happy Gilmore.
