Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You is officially the greatest holiday song!
As per Billboard, the co-writer of the hit holiday anthem, Walter Afanasieff, surprising revealed that he wasn’t satisfied with the song to begin with.
While creating the track, that has now crossed two billion streams on Spotify, the first holiday song to do so on the platform, he recalled, “At the time, I thought it was overly simple, and I really didn’t like it.”
Criticizing the “oversimplified melody” he also revealed how he didn’t like the Emotions hitmaker’s voice on the track either.
“My first reaction was, ‘That sounds like someone doing voice scales,’” Afanasieff told Billboard in 2013 while in 2014 he stated how he thought the song would probably be “no big deal.”
“Christmas music and Christmas albums by artists weren’t the big deal that they are today. Back then, you didn’t have a lot of artists with Christmas albums; It wasn’t a known science at all back then, and there was nobody who did new, big Christmas songs,” the songwriter said.
He continued, “We were going to release it as kind of an everyday, ‘hey, you know, we’re putting out a Christmas album. No big deal.’”
The co-writer to Mariah Carey’s song, All I Want For Christmas Is You, still remain unsure as to the exact reason behind the track garnering wild success each year, saying that it seem to have stuck to listeners “for whatever reason.”
